Bob Gale has once again made it clear that he has no interest in making another Back to the Future movie. According to the franchise’s co-creator, the story ended exactly where it was supposed to, and bringing it back without Michael J. Fox would not feel right.
Bob Gale says there should never be another ‘Back to the Future’ movie
Speaking about the future of the franchise, Gale said the ending of Back to the Future Part III was always meant to be the final chapter.
“We put the end at the end of part three because it was the end,” Gale explained. He added that once Michael J. Fox publicly revealed his Parkinson’s diagnosis, it made the decision even easier. “Do you want to see a Back to the Future movie without Michael J. Fox?” Gale said. “The answer is no.”
For Gale, the series is inseparable from Fox and his role as Marty McFly. He has repeatedly said he has no interest in recasting the character or making a reboot with a younger actor. In his view, any new version would simply be compared to the original and fall short.
Gale has also become more outspoken about protecting the trilogy’s legacy. He and director Robert Zemeckis reportedly have a contract with Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment that prevents any sequel or remake from happening without their approval.
Recently, Gale joked that his answer to people demanding Back to the Future 4 is simply “F— you.” Despite the humor, he said he truly believes that too many modern franchises ruin their endings by returning years later just to make more money.
Instead, Gale believes the final scene of Part III, when Doc Brown tells Marty and Jennifer that their future “hasn’t been written yet,” remains the perfect ending.
Although there will not be another movie, Gale has continued expanding the franchise in other ways. He wrote the stage adaptation Back to the Future: The Musical, which he sees as a companion to the films rather than a replacement.
Gale is also reportedly working with Fox on a new retrospective book titled Future Boy, which is expected to be released in 2026 and look back at the making and legacy of the trilogy.
