Dan Levy is still mourning Catherine O’Hara, and his latest comments about his former Schitt’s Creek co-star made it clear just how deeply her loss is still being felt.
What Dan Levy said about Catherine O’Hara
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 31, Levy opened up about the death of Catherine O’Hara and said the response from fans has brought him some comfort. He said the outpouring of love after her passing has been overwhelming and described O’Hara as “irreplaceable.”
He also called her “one of the great queens” of comedy while reflecting on the impact she had on everyone around her. Levy has been publicly grieving O’Hara since her death on January 30.
The Emmy-winning actress, best known for Schitt’s Creek, Home Alone, and Beetlejuice, died at 71 after a brief illness, with her manager confirming the news at the time.
She had also recently appeared in Apple TV+’s The Studio. When news of her death first broke, Levy shared an emotional tribute on Instagram that quickly spread across social media.
He wrote that he would “cherish every funny memory” he was lucky enough to make with her and called it a gift to have spent so many years in the “warm glow” of her brilliance. He also noted that because of her decades-long bond with his father, Eugene Levy, O’Hara felt like family long before she ever played his mother on screen. That history is a big part of why the loss has hit so hard.
Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy had worked together for more than 50 years, going back to Second City and SCTV, before reuniting for Schitt’s Creek. Dan Levy has often spoken about how much O’Hara meant to him creatively, and in his latest appearance, he made it clear that it has not changed.
For fans of Schitt’s Creek, it is another reminder that O’Hara’s legacy goes way beyond Moira Rose. She was one of those rare performers who could be completely absurd, deeply emotional, and instantly unforgettable all at once.
And from the sound of it, Dan Levy knows exactly how lucky he was to share the screen with her.
