Criticism can weather, break, or shape a person’s career. Some may not even take it in stride, but not Milly Alcock. The House of the Dragon star had the perfect response to Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott’s critique, and here’s what the star said.
Milly Alcock responds to Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott’s comments
Milly Alcock discussed Supergirl and fans’ backlash in a conversation with Vanity Fair. The reporters asked her various questions, including her response to Martin Scorsese and Riley Scott’s take on superhero films.
She said, “I get it. They’ve been around for f—— ever, making phenomenal films. Not every film is for everyone. The beauty of art is that you can be selective.”
This was in the context of Scorsese’s statements in an interview with Empire Magazine. He gave his opinion on how Marvel Movies aren’t cinema, and fans were fuming by the end of it all. This enraged most superhero fans and comic book readers.
Scorsese later wrote a piece in the New York Times explaining his stance on what it actually meant. “The fact that the films themselves don’t interest me is a matter of personal taste and temperament. I know that if I were younger, if I’d come of age at a later time, I might have been excited by these pictures and maybe even wanted to make one myself. But I grew up when I did, and I developed a sense of what they were and what they could be.”
Ridley Scott’s comments were about the superhero films having poor scripts and being “boring as s—.” This was also slammed by many fans, but here’s the thing.
Be it storytelling or artistry per se, superhero movies and series follow a certain rhythm of rinse and repeat. Alcock took the criticism elegantly and also made one thing clear: these are subjective opinions by the end of the day.
Earlier, some fans critiqued the show for its dark and traumatic take on the lead character’s past and background. This has dialed down some of the criticism as netizens praised Alcock for her response to the entire controversy.
Supergirl releases on 26th June 2026.
