The Housemaid sequel is hurtling towards a box office clash with Avengers: Secret Wars. Both films are set to release in theaters on December 17, 2027. The two films are eyeing a Christmas box office clash, one of the most lucrative windows in Hollywood.
Mega box office clash between ‘The Housemaid’ sequel and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’
The finale of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, directed by the Russo Brothers, is expected to feature a major crossover of Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and many other characters. Although the official plot of Avengers: Secret Wars has not been revealed yet, if the comic book storyline is followed, it could serve as a fitting conclusion to the multiverse chaos, with different universes colliding in catastrophic events. Secret Wars will conclude Phase 6 of the MCU, and nothing short of an epic, action-packed spectacle is expected.
On the contrary, The Housemaid’s Secret, starring Sydney Sweeney, will see her character take up a new job with a family, uncovering dark secrets she never anticipated. After the success of the first film, which grossed an impressive $400 million on a modest budget, Lionsgate is backing another installment. It wouldn’t be a stretch to predict which film could dominate the box office in the Christmas corridor.
The track record of the Avengers series suggests that Secret Wars could potentially overpower the psychological thriller in ticket sales, given its massive scale and franchise culmination stakes. Meanwhile, the second installment of The Housemaid will likely target a niche audience of adults seeking an alternative to superhero spectacle.
Clearly, the studio behind The Housemaid series isn’t aiming to compete directly with the final installment of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga in terms of box office numbers. However, it appears confident of turning a sizable profit on a comparatively modest budget. To this day, the MCU holds major box office records, with Avengers: Endgame standing as the highest-grossing superhero film of all time, earning $2.797 billion globally.
Do you think it is the right business decision for The Housemaid’s Secret to release on the same day as Secret Wars? Or could a release date change be on the cards for the Sydney Sweeney starrer? Let us know in the comments below.
