Inaki Godoy is making waves on the internet after his iconic role as Luffy in the One Piece live-action series. The actor now has a cherished fanbase and is loved by fans across the globe, but that’s not it. He’s an avid anime enthusiast, and recently, he gave his pick for the greatest anime character, and guess what? It’s not Luffy.
Inaki Godoy reveals his greatest anime character
Inaki Godoy did an anime ranking with his One Piece costars Taz Skylar and Mackenyu, who play the roles of Sanji and Roronoa Zoro, respectively. Inaki put Goku in the first position, saying:
“ You gotta pay respect. He’s like the GOAT of anime. You know what I’m saying? If I could say one, I would say Goku is like one of the classic anime characters. I say with respect, I think Goku should be number one.”
Godoy naming Goku isn’t surprising considering his choice of anime. He previously stated that he started watching My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan, Death Note, and now, Dragon Ball.
Most importantly, Goku from Dragon Ball isn’t merely a character; he’s an icon that ultimately shaped and redefined most shonen tropes in both manga and anime. Akira Toriyama’s series is often considered the father of the Big 3.
The Big 3 of Shonen Jump are One Piece, Bleach, and Naruto. The series started in the late 80s and is still running in full swing. Dragon Ball isn’t your run-of-the-mill shonen series; it’s an emotion. It reflected friendships, transformations, and struggles.
Most 70s kids grew up watching Goku as a child, venturing on a journey to become strong. He trained extensively under Master Roshi, which paved the way for themes like resilience and a stronger self-belief.
Eiichiro Oda, in particular, has cited Dragon Ball as one of the main influences for his magnum opus, One Piece. Luffy’s goofy demeanor, his protective nature, his friendliness, and his resilience do remind one of Goku; however, both characters are different when it comes to their individual goals and journeys.
Needless to say, Dragon Ball has and shall always remain a trailblazer for most shonen anime for decades to come.
