After months of rumors and speculation, TikTok has announced that it has begun developing original short-form television series. The move represents one of the largest changes in the company’s history. The move comes at a time when vertical ‘micro-drama’ content consisting of one to five-minute episodes continues to rise in popularity and become a billion-dollar business in the United States.
Inside TikTok’s Push into the TV Business
The new direction that the company is taking is one in which it has developed a brand called ‘TikTok Drama.’ Late last year, the company filed trademarks in the United States for the production of original TV series, web series, and short-form dramas. In March of 2026, reports confirmed that the company had already begun casting actors for the first wave of soap opera-style series.
Another thing is that the social media site is testing out a new “Short Drama” within the app, which is expected to be the main source of content in the future. Currently, the section is filled with third-party content and AI-generated dramas, but the fans believe that it is only a matter of time before the social media site starts adding its own content.
This comes at a time when the social media site has seen the huge success of apps such as ReelShort and DramaBox, which gained popularity through the provision of third-party content designed specifically for consumption through mobile phones. Ironically, the apps are using TikTok ads to gain popularity. However, the social media site is now planning to compete with the apps.
The Company is also teaming up with Tubi through the Creatorverse Incubator program. This program is designed to assist the most popular creators on the site in turning their ideas into TV shows, with some of the shows expected to premiere on Tubi before the clips and reactions are uploaded to the social media site.
TikTok’s timing is no accident. Internal data gathered in the year 2025 indicates that most Generation Z users start watching their favorite shows or movies the moment they are exposed to them through social media sites. This indicates that the social media site is planning to ensure that the next time around, the users do not need to switch apps.
