All this time, fans have been on the edge of their seats for Moana’s live-action. The film will release this year and will star Catherine Laga’aia and Dwayne Johnson in central roles, but here’s the thing. The trailer showed Johnson in a wig, which turned out to be a complete meme. Here’s how the actor addressed the entire thing.

Dwayne Johnson speaks up on his wig in ‘Moana’

Recently, Dwayne Johnson spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his wig for Moana. He addressed the elephant, or rather, the questionable wig, in this interview.

“There were a handful of iterations that we were looking to apply very early. What is the most cost-effective? What’s the most time-effective? But ultimately, we have to go back to the main thing, which is, what’s the best thing for the film and the audience’s experience?”

To give context, Disney released a full trailer of the Moana live-action film on YouTube. The clip was posted on 23rd March, and it immediately drew attention. What followed was a barrage of reels that ultimately became a meme fest, but what happened exactly?

Well, Johnson’s first look as Chief Tui Waialiki seems unbecoming, as most fans suggested. The wig didn’t do much justice to it, and it received backlash from netizens. Some called the wig cringe, while others compared it to John Cena’s blonde wig from Barbie.

This isn’t a first, especially when it concerns live-action. Recently, Charithra Chandran’s blue wig in One Piece live-action was ridiculed by some fans. They preferred she have her hair dyed blue instead of opting for blue wigs.

While some heavily criticized the wig choices in Moana, others milked the entire situation into meme material. It had the internet in stitches, especially after the trailer’s release, and this happened within the span of 3 days.

With Dwayne Johnson’s response to the cost-effective wigs for Moana’s live action, fans are still not convinced about the hairdo choices. It seems misaligned if one were to put two and two together.

Moana is scheduled for release on 10th July 2026.
